GPT‑6 Astra: Who Gets Access and What to Check Before Using It

OpenAI has begun a gradual GPT‑6 Astra rollout. Here is how access differs across Chat, Work and Codex, with API pricing and practical checks.

OpenAI introduced GPT‑6 Astra on September 3, 2026 and began a gradual rollout. The company is focusing on work that involves files, applications and a browser. However, the Astra name in an announcement does not mean the model has already reached every paid account or every ChatGPT mode. The official release notes explicitly describe a staged launch.

For users, there are two separate questions: where the model is available and whether it helps complete a specific job. Here are the verified access details and a practical way to evaluate the release. This article reviews the documentation; it is not a hands-on comparison of Astra.

What OpenAI says has improved

In the Astra announcement, OpenAI describes improvements in computer use, software development and document creation. Demonstrated workflows include spreadsheets and presentations, interface checks and sequences of actions inside applications. The company also announced an experimental notes and earlier-context search mechanism in Codex for lengthy tasks.

The practical value depends on the finished output. For a report, that means a file with correct formulas and clear conclusions; for a website, a page you can open and inspect. A lengthy account of the work performed does not, by itself, establish that a spreadsheet calculates correctly or that buttons work.

The first three rows follow the ChatGPT help article; the last follows the API model page. A missing Astra option in regular Plus chat does not establish a subscription error: check both your plan and the product mode. The help article specifies Codex CLI 0.153.0 or later. Check your account for applicable limits: Pro does not mean unlimited model use.

What an API call costs

Standard base rates are $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Caching and additional tools have separate billing rules. Prompts above 272,000 input tokens incur higher rates across the full request. These are API model terms, not ChatGPT subscription prices.

Illustrative calculation: 20,000 ordinary input tokens and 5,000 billable output tokens at the base rates would cost $0.45: $0.20 + $0.25. This excludes tools, caching, other processing modes and repeated requests. It is an arithmetic example, not a measured price for completing a task.

A useful first assignment

Start with something whose output is easy to verify: turn a public price list into a comparison spreadsheet or update a copy of a small webpage. Specify the required file, source material and definition of completion before the model begins.

  1. One deliverable. Ask for a usable spreadsheet with formulas rather than general advice about automation.
  2. Clear boundaries. Identify the files that can be edited and what needs to be preserved.
  3. Verification. Open the result and compare several values with the source; for code, check the actual behavior.
  4. Total time. Count prompt preparation, waiting and corrections. That total shows whether the task became faster.

Our guide to calculating AI tool value can help assess the cost. Compare the same assignment with the same requirements for the finished result.

Why a stronger model still needs verification

The published Astra system card describes improvements alongside remaining risks of unwanted actions in evaluation settings. Reliability claims should therefore not be treated as a promise that every run will be correct.

OpenAI’s computer-use documentation recommends limiting access to the required resources, checking the final state and confirming consequential actions. For a website owner, that means starting with a copy, reviewing changes before publication and checking the page instead of relying solely on a “done” message.

Judge Astra by the completed work it helps you obtain. If your existing tool already handles short requests well, there is no need to change your process urgently. The most interesting opportunities are longer assignments involving files, a browser and several steps, with a result you can clearly verify.
