iPhone Duo launches: what the folding display offers and what to check before buying

Sales of the first foldable iPhone begin on October 23. Understand pricing, the two displays, app compatibility, feature limits and data-transfer preparation.

Apple begins selling iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, on October 23. The official announcement lists a starting US price of $1,999. Here is what the format changes and what to check before making an expensive purchase. The illustrations are AI-generated concepts, not representations of the production device’s exact design.

When and where sales begin

The first wave covers more than 70 countries and regions, with another 28 scheduled for October 30. That does not establish identical store stock or final pricing everywhere. Avoid simply converting the US figure at the exchange rate: compare offers for the specific country, configuration and seller. Confirm the delivery date on the order, especially when buying a device originally intended for a different market.

What the folding design changes

The technical specifications list a 5.4-inch outer display, 7.6-inch inner display, A20 Pro chip, 256GB to 2TB storage and Touch ID in the side button. Weight is 254g and folded depth is 11.3mm. The rear cameras are 48MP main and ultrawide units; the advertised optical-quality 2x view does not mean there is a separate third telephoto lens.

Apple’s feature overview shows Split View for two apps side by side and an interface that adapts as the device folds or rotates. The practical question before buying is which two things you actually do together: compare an invoice with an email, read a document while taking notes, or consult two sources. Without such tasks, the larger inner display might mainly become another way to consume content rather than a meaningful change to your workflow.

We suggest evaluating both forms of the phone. Type a few sentences on the outer display, open navigation and try your usual back gesture. Repeat a familiar task on the inner display, including with the keyboard visible. Reading a page and editing a spreadsheet make different demands on usable space. Also consider one-handed grip and whether the folded device fits comfortably in the pocket or bag you normally carry. The most impressive demonstration may not represent the activity you repeat most often.

A larger display also needs suitable apps

Apple asks developers to adapt their apps with Xcode 27.1 and check different device poses. An App Store optimisation badge is tied to submitting Duo screenshots; those screenshots become mandatory for new submissions from April 2027. This indicates that ecosystem preparation is continuing. A badge does not replace checking your own particular workflow, even if the store listing looks well suited to the new display.

Make a short list of essential software: banking, password management, work messaging, document editing and video calls. For each, consider readability, button placement and whether entered text survives a change in the phone’s position. Merely opening an app does not answer those questions. If you cannot use a demonstration device, look for a demonstration of these specific actions in the relevant app version, rather than relying on a photograph of its home screen or an unrelated benchmark result.

Do not assume every announced feature is ready immediately

Apple Pencil with USB-C support was announced for later this year. The launch footnotes describe Siri AI as initially available in English beta and initially unavailable on iOS in the EU. These conditions apply to that particular capability; the language list for other Apple Intelligence features should not automatically be treated as the availability list for Siri AI.

Before paying, choose the two or three capabilities that would justify changing phones and check each against your country, language and software version. If your main reason depends on a future update, our recommendation is to decide based on what is already available. Separately, consult independent camera and battery evaluations with clear test conditions. A specification list does not establish how the phone will perform during your own mixture of navigation, messaging, photography and work.

Clarify servicing and the full cost

For an imported device, establish who accepts a repair request and where servicing takes place. For example, Apple’s US limited-warranty terms allow warranty service to be restricted to the country of original sale. Check the terms applicable to your particular purchase separately. Ask the seller about proof of purchase, the service route, returns and necessary accessories, and keep the answers with the order. This is especially useful when a low advertised price depends on buying through an unfamiliar seller.

Prepare the data transfer

Apple’s preparation checklist includes a backup, your Apple Account password and arrangements for transferring cellular service. For Quick Start, the old device should be connected to Wi-Fi with Bluetooth enabled. Keep the phones close together and connected to power until migration finishes. Direct transfer occupies both devices, while an iCloud download can continue in the background.

We suggest setting aside a time when you do not urgently need the phone for banking authentication or a work call. Before erasing the old device, check photographs, essential files, messaging apps and account access on the new one. Copying data and successfully signing in to every important application are separate checks. Our iPhone backup guide explains how to prepare storage and verify a backup, so the move begins with a recoverable copy rather than an assumption that everything will transfer automatically.
