Windows 11 26H2 starts rolling out: how to check availability

On September 29, Microsoft announced the Windows 11 26H2 rollout. Eligible devices running 24H2 or 25H2 can move through a small enablement package because these releases share a servicing foundation.

Where to find 26H2

Open Settings → Windows Update. Microsoft suggests enabling the option to receive the latest updates as soon as they become available; the 26H2 download appears once the device is eligible. Availability expands gradually, and Microsoft may place safeguard holds on machines with known compatibility issues.

If the update is missing, first check your version’s page in Windows release health, which tracks rollout status and known issues. A missing button is not automatically a malfunction or a reason to bypass compatibility safeguards.

Before restarting

For a work computer, our suggested preparation is straightforward: save open documents, confirm that important files have a backup and choose a time without urgent calls. After installation, check the tasks you actually depend on, such as VPN access, printing, meeting audio and work applications. A quick boot alone does not establish that every workflow still behaves as expected.

26H2 is an annual Windows version. It is different from a monthly update identifier such as September’s KB5124008, which we covered separately.

A separate developer announcement: WSL Containers

Microsoft also made WSL Containers generally available that day. It updates through wsl –update and uses wslc for container management. The release supports health checks, mounts and networking controls, while Compose support remains on the roadmap.

This is a separate announcement, not a promise that installing 26H2 automatically migrates Docker projects. Check a project’s specific requirements before changing its environment.
